Leather care
Caring for your handmade leather strap
Your strap is made from genuine, craftsman-grade raw leather, cut and carved by hand, stained, and finished with a top coat. A little care keeps it looking right for years.
The basics
- Stock straps have already had time to settle, so they're ready to play.
- Wipe the underside and edges with a clean cotton rag to lift any leftover surface pigment.
- No conditioner or oils: they can make the colour wick out.
- Keep it dry, sweat included. Wipe it down after a hot gig.
- The acrylic top coat can be lightly buffed to bring back the shine.
- Wide acoustic straps have a wax finish that can be buffed and re-waxed.
- A bit stiff at first? Play it in. It gets more supple with use.
Questions
Should I oil or condition my strap?
No. The stain is finished with a top coat, and conditioners or oils can draw the colour out of the leather.
Will the colour rub off on my clothes?
Straps are stained with professional oil-based pigment that resists wicking, but it's still best to avoid light-coloured clothes for the first while. If it's an issue, an acrylic coat can be added to the underside and edges.
The strap feels stiff. Is that normal?
Yes. Raw craftsman leather softens as you play. Give it a few gigs and it will shape to you.
